Challenge 2000 Vegetable Garden

Transition Unit

The Transition Unit is an educational unit that looks at providing opportunities for young people aged 17-24yrs to transition from school into tertiary training or work. The unit works with young people to create individual programmes tailored to the specific needs of each individual.

Helping the Community

Each young person works with a mentor to set and work towards goals such as developing academic skills, attaining a NZ driver's license, creating a CV, developing communication (especially interview) skills, achieving a fitness goal and developing life skills such as cooking.

The Transition Unit allows Challenge 2000 to meet the needs of an often elusive, yet increasingly at risk age group.

Meet one of our Transition Students:

Josephina!

Josephina

This is Josephina - one of our fantastic young people taking part in a transition programme. Josephina has been coming into Challenge on a weekly basis to complete education programmes and to upskill for whatever her future holds. This is Josephina with a fantastic artwork she did recently. Josephina has finished her time at Challenge but we hope to see her back to visit soon. We wish her all the best!

Transition Unit September Update

Recently myself and the boys have been spending a lot of time out on a farm in Ohariu valley.  As it is time for docking, the boys have learnt about docking lambs.  They have also helped with some farm fencing, having removed old fences and starting one whole new fence.

The farmer has his own butchery.  We have killed a sheep and butchered it up to share between them and the larger family.  We also slaughtered a cattle beast which we hung for a week and have now fed the staff and boys fresh steak for lunch.  The boys also cut down a large grand daddy pine tree known as old man pine and they have learnt some chain saw maintenance. They are slowly improving their saw skills and maybe bigger chainsaws are on the agenda soon!!

Now that the rain is stopping we are also cleaning up our back yard at C2K, cutting back the large tree at the front to let more sunlight in and getting the garden ready for the next planting. The guys I work with are learning many practical skills and really seem to be enjoying what they are learning. If you have any odd jobs, that you want done, then please just let us know. No job is too big or too small.
